Your ECKO Publishing Publishing and Distribution Package includes an ISBN number and barcode specifically assigned to your book. An ISBN serves as identification for books that are recognized around the world. Below is a list of common questions asked about ISBN assignment.

What is an ISBN? ISBN stands for "International Standard Book Number" (ISBN). It is a unique 13 digit identification number for books, CD's, tapes, etc... published internationally.
Why do I need
an ISBN?
ISBN numbers are used to identify a specific book title. Each title gets it's own identifying number which is assigned for the life of the book. It allows for better marketing of products by bookstores, libraries, distributors, universities, and self publishers. If for example, you have a 3 volume book, each title would have it's own ISBN number.
What does an
ISBN consist of?
An ISBN consists of thirteen digits and the letters "ISBN". It consists of four parts - each separated by a hyphen.
A sample ISBN number is 978-1-4276-9001-1
  1. Group or country identifier - identifies a national or geographic grouping of publishers.
  2. Publisher identifier - identifies a particular publisher within a group. ECKO Publishing will be listed as the publisher of your book.
  3. Title identifier - identifies a particular title or edition of a title.
  4. Check digit - the single digit at the end of the ISBN which validates the ISBN.
Who assigns
an ISBN?
ISBN group agencies assign ISBN's worldwide. The ISBN Agency in Berlin coordinates all ISBN's for worldwide use. Bowker is the U.S ISBN agency that is responsible for distribution to publishers in the U.S.
How long does
it take to
get an ISBN?
Once you purchase your publishing and distribution package, you will enter some simple information about your book. Once completed, you will receive your assigned number.
Where is the
ISBN printed?
Your ISBN should be printed on the lower portion of the back cover of your book, above the bar code. It should also be printed within the book on the copyright page. When ECKO completes your interior layout and cover design, we will take care of this for you.
What products should have
an ISBN number?
All book and book like products should have an ISBN. Each time a book is replaced by a new edition, it should get a new ISBN. Each part of a series should also have its own ISBN. An ISBN can only be used once.
