Publishing Comparison
Traditionally, in order to publish a book, you would need to send your manuscript to dozens and even hundreds of publishing companies until you found a company who believed there was a market for your book. Even if that happened, quickly and easily, or at all for that matter, it wasn't necessarily good news. Once a traditional publishing company selects your book for publication, they buy the rights to the book from you and give you a small upfront fee for the rights of your book, based on your previous success as an established author.
If this is your first book or you can't demonstrate a history of book sales, the publishing company will likely negotiate an amount that secures their interest but gives you what amounts to a measly compensation; you will get likely get royalties but that will probably only add up to pennies per book. Once they own the rights to your book, you are no more than a consultant to your own book. This means they can change anything they want, and it also means that they can choose not to promote it which means that you end up with no more than the small fee they paid you initially and you have no further rights to promote it yourself. It might be equated with a legal adoption of sorts. Once you sign away the rights to your book, the book rights belong to someone else. Data shows us that most books that are bought by traditional publishing companies never make it to the big time.
The other Publishing Option is Self Publishing. Self Publishing allows you to keep the rights to your book and also make greater profits on sales. Although there is out of pocket expense in self publishing your book, you are the one to make the profits from sales and not the publishing company. The problem with most self publishing companies is that they don't provide all the services necessary for powerful book publishing, and by the time you are done purchasing the publishing services, you don't have any money left for marketing and publicity. Also, if a publishing company doesn't provide distribution, you are totally out of luck because distributors only work with big companies and will not list your book. Worst of all, most self publishing companies are focused more on their profits than on you, and the author gets lost in the mix. With some major self publishing companies, you don't even get to speak to a real person and the email support is lax at best. It is no wonder, many authors have challenging experiences self publishing their books.
